Squash Blossom Series

The squash blossoms I paint are closing, but they have so much more to say. They have passed their moment of perfect prime in nature’s schedule; but they have only begun to speak of the joyous glow of light and color, of the inner essence and individuality--even of relationships--that only comes when the blossoms continue on:  wilting, wrinkling, restating their own shapes into forms only (and ever) more eloquent.

As poets do with words, I try in my art to choose and put everything where it is best--for reasons and rules that I can only intuit. My art is not about concept and innovation, but simply the careful and patient rendering of subjects and objects to which I am drawn. I try to render in such a way that I will always know what it was that made it unique--one of a kind while one of many.
